Seven-judge Bench to hear if legislative privilege overrides free speech

A seven-judge Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court is set to hear a long-pending case examining the conflict between legislative privileges under Article 194 and the fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a). The case stems from a 2003 incident where the Tamil Nadu Assembly invoked its privileges to order the arrest of journalists from The Hindu for an editorial critical of the then Chief Minister.
