Cookie Policy
Effective Date: 18 September 2026
1. Introduction
MockTestZone ("we", "our", or "us") uses cookies and similar tracking technologies to improve your experience on our AI-powered exam preparation platform. This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are, how we use them, and how you can manage your cookie preferences.
Note: Our platform requires certain essential cookies to function properly. Disabling these cookies may affect your ability to use our services, especially exam sessions and user authentication.
2. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device (computer, smartphone, or tablet) when you visit a website. They help websites remember information about your visit, making your next visit easier and the site more useful to you.
We also use similar technologies like local storage and session storage for storing information in your browser.
3. Types of Cookies We Use
3.1 Essential Cookies (Required)
These cookies are necessary for the platform to function and cannot be disabled.
- Session Cookies: Maintain your login state and exam session
- Authentication Cookies: Verify your identity for secure access
- Exam State Cookies: Preserve your exam progress and timer
- Security Cookies: Protect against CSRF attacks and ensure secure browsing
- Guest Session Cookies: Enable 80% feature access without registration
Duration: Session-based or up to 24 hours
3.2 Functional Cookies
These cookies enhance functionality and personalization.
- Theme Preference: Remember your light/dark mode selection
- Language Settings: Store your preferred language (if applicable)
- Exam Preferences: Remember your exam category preferences
- UI Settings: Store layout and display preferences
Duration: Up to 1 year
3.3 Performance Cookies
These cookies help us understand how visitors interact with our platform.
- Google Analytics: Runs with Google Consent Mode set to
analytics_storage: denied, so it sets no cookies — no_ga, no_gid. It runs for everyone - Umami: Our own analytics. Sets no cookies, so it runs either way
- PostHog: Product analytics — which features get used, where people get stuck. Sets no cookies of its own (it keeps state in your browser's local storage), so it runs either way
- Performance Monitoring: Measure load times and error rates
Umami and PostHog read a first-party visitor id (visitor_pub) stored for 12 months, so we can count returning visitors without knowing who you are. We do not use session replay — neither tool records your screen or your answers.
Duration: Up to 2 years
3.4 Third-Party Cookies
Cookies set by third-party services we use.
- Google OAuth: For Google sign-in functionality
- Payment Processors: For secure payment handling (if applicable)
- CDN Services: For content delivery optimization
Duration: Varies by provider
4. Specific Cookies We Use
| Cookie Name | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| next-auth.session-token | User authentication | 24 hours | Essential |
| next-auth.csrf-token | Security (CSRF protection) | Session | Essential |
| theme | Dark/Light mode preference | 1 year | Functional |
| exam-session | Active exam state | Until exam completion | Essential |
| guest-session | Guest user identification | 30 days | Essential |
| visitor_pub | Anonymous visitor id used by Umami and PostHog | 12 months | Performance |
| visitor_id | Signed counterpart of visitor_pub (server-side, not readable by scripts) | 12 months | Performance |
5. Local Storage and Session Storage
In addition to cookies, we use browser storage mechanisms:
- Local Storage: Stores exam preferences, draft answers, and UI settings
- Session Storage: Temporarily stores exam timer and current question state
- IndexedDB: Caches exam questions for offline access (if enabled)
6. Managing Your Cookie Preferences
6.1 Browser Settings
You can control cookies through your browser settings:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and Security → Cookies
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies
- Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Cookies
- Edge: Settings → Privacy, Search, and Services → Cookies
6.2 Managing Cookies on MockTestZone
We no longer show a cookie consent banner, because there is nothing left to opt into. Every analytics tool we run is cookieless, and the only cookies we set are the essential ones listed above. If you want to block even those, use your browser settings — the platform will stop being able to keep you signed in or hold your exam state.
6.3 What Our Analytics Actually Do
- All three analytics tools run for everyone — Google Analytics, Umami and PostHog. None of them sets a cookie of its own. They are how we see basic usage: which pages and tests get opened, and where people get stuck.
- None of them records your screen or your answers. We do not use session replay.
- Always on: essential cookies for login, security and exam state. The platform cannot work without them.
Clearing your site data removes the visitor id and the stored analytics state.
Warning:
Disabling essential cookies will prevent you from:
- Logging into your account
- Taking exams
- Saving progress
- Accessing premium features
7. Impact of Disabling Cookies
If you disable cookies:
- Essential Cookies: Platform will not function properly
- Functional Cookies: You'll need to reset preferences on each visit
- Performance Cookies: we set none. Google Analytics, Umami and PostHog are all cookieless, so blocking cookies does not switch them off — they are how we see basic usage such as which pages and tests are opened
- Third-Party Cookies: Some features like social login may not work
8. Do Not Track Signals
We currently do not respond to Do Not Track (DNT) signals. However, you can manage your cookie preferences using the methods described above.
9. Updates to This Policy
We may update this Cookie Policy periodically. We will notify you of significant changes by posting a notice on our platform or updating the "Effective Date" above.
10. Cookies and Children
Our platform is intended for users aged 13 and above. We do not knowingly collect cookie data from children under 13. Parents can manage cookie settings through browser controls.
