Piyush Goyal says India negotiating FTAs with 8 to 9 more blocs, aims to cover 75% of global trade

The aggressive push for Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) marks a significant shift in India's trade strategy, moving away from past hesitations often rooted in domestic industry protection concerns. FTAs are designed to reduce or eliminate tariffs, quotas, and other trade barriers between participating nations, facilitating preferential market access. By targeting FTAs that will cover 75% of global trade, India aims to become a crucial node in Global Value Chains (GVCs) (the different stages of the production process located across different countries). This strategy is vital for boosting India's manufacturing sector and increasing its share in global exports, aligning with initiatives like Make in India. However, the key challenge remains negotiating terms that balance the need for foreign investment and market access with protecting sensitive domestic sectors, such as agriculture and certain manufacturing industries. The focus on sectors like artificial intelligence and data centers highlights the shift towards a digital and technology-driven economy.

India's proactive engagement in negotiating FTAs with multiple blocs reflects its strategic intent to diversify its trade partnerships and reduce over-reliance on any single market. The recent focus on developed economies, as evidenced by the nine agreements covering 38 developed countries, signals a strategic pivot. Earlier agreements, such as the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with Japan and Korea, and the ASEAN-India Free Trade Area (AIFTA), laid the groundwork for regional integration.
